I am very excited to announce that Valencia, California native Owen Shadrick has signed a WHL Scholarship and Development Agreement with the Red Deer Rebels in the Western Hockey League. The agreement was presented by Red Deer Rebels Owner and General Manager Brent Sutter after Shadrick (16) impressed scouts with his play and character at the recent Circle K Classic in Calgary and then again when he was invited to practice with the Rebels in Red Deer, Alberta shortly after.
Ironically, this news comes about a year after Shadrick scored a huge game winning overtime goal for the Los Angeles Jr. Kings 15U AAA to win the California Amateur Hockey Association State Championship in front of his hometown crowd of family and friends at The Cube in Valencia, CA. After the conclusion of the 2023-2024 season, Shadrick took a leap of faith and moved to Chicago after receiving an invite to play for the Chicago Mission 16U AAA team. That move to Chicago appears to have paid off big time for Owen as it has led to this incredible opportunity presented by Brent Sutter to play for Red Deer in the Western Hockey League.
Does that Sutter name sound familiar to you? Brent Sutter is the younger brother of former Los Angeles Kings coach, Darryl Sutter who won two Stanley Cups in LA. Brent is no slouch himself as he was just inducted into the New York Islanders Hall of Fame last month where he won two Stanley Cups with the Islanders. He played for the New York Islanders and the Chicago Blackhawks, finishing his career with 829 points (363 goals, 466 assists) in 1,111 regular season games and 74 points (30 goals, 44 assists) in 144 playoff games.
The Red Deer Rebels play in the (WHL) Western Hockey League. The WHL, OHL, and QMJHL make up the Canadian Hockey League which is considered the highest level of junior hockey in Canada. Red Deer has produced several NHL players over the years including current Los Angeles Kings goaltender Darcy Kuemper who played for the Rebels for three seasons and was drafted by the Minnesota Wild in 2009.
I am not surprised that Brent Sutter was impressed by Owen’s play and character. I have known Owen for many years on and off the ice. He is a fantastic hockey player and an even better young man!
Owen plans on working very hard this offseason in the weight room and on the ice with the goal of taking his game to the next level. He will report to Red Deer’s training camp in August in hopes of securing a roster spot on the Red Deer Rebels for the 2025-2026 season.
Owen is the son of proud parents Jaime and Lidia Shadrick. Congratulations Owen Shadrick!! Wishing you the best of luck!!
